Exchange Rate and Industrial Productivity: Evidence from Nigeria

Abstract:

This paper assesses how exchange rate volatility affects the productivity of the Nigerian industrial sector. Analyzing data from the Central Bank of Nigeria, the study finds that frequent currency fluctuations increase the cost of imported machinery and raw materials, leading to lower industrial output. The study recommends a managed float exchange rate system that prioritizes stability to support local manufacturers and improve industrial competitiveness.
