Exchange Rate and Agricultural Output Growth in Nigeria

Abstract:

This investigation examines the relationship between exchange rate fluctuations and the growth of agricultural output in Nigeria. Using the ARDL model, the study assesses both short-run and long-run effects. The results indicate that while short-run currency depreciation can sometimes incentivize exports, prolonged exchange rate volatility generally exerts a negative impact on agricultural productivity due to the high cost of imported inputs like machinery and fertilizers. The study concludes that exchange rate stability is vital for agricultural sustainability.
