Environmental Quality and Literacy Rate Nexus in Nigeria: A Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) Approach

Abstract:

This paper examined the impact of environmental quality indicators on literacy rates in Nigeria. The data’s stationary qualities were established using the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) unit root test, while the ARDL/Bounds cointegration technique was employed to established long run relationship among the variables. The model was estimated using the Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) technique. Findings indicated a significant long-run impact of environmental quality indicators on literacy in Nigeria. Specifically, air quality and municipal solid waste had a positive and statistically significant impact on literacy, suggesting that a cleaner environment promotes better educational outcomes. The study recommends that the government should integrate environmental sustainability into educational planning.
